fish out of water

I have to confess...I'm not a fan of eating anything that comes from the sea, lake, small ponds or fish tanks.

The smell.

It gets to me.

Oh and the taste makes me gag.

Please don't take offense my seafood loving fans.

It's a shame really because I grew up in a lobster loving home. You'd think I would have picked up the taste for it. And then I met boy who loves those crab cakes drenched in butter and somewhere in those marriage vows I pledged to never make him a seafood dinner.

He still said I Do. Bless him for that.

And then 3 months into our marriage I learned of a family tradition on boy's side that involved hands down the nastiest seafood joint that probably violated every health code in the book you ever did see. You could smell it a mile away and see the big flashing sign five miles away. I tried many a time to come down with Cholera on those day, but my immune system failed me. So, I put on the biggest smile and ordered a side salad and retreated to gaining my nutrients for that meal off the table's tray of saltine crackers. I swear on my life that salad had a very fishy taste though. I prayed many a prayer that a new restaurant would become favored and y'all guess what my prayers were answered. Two months ago that place went flat out of business. I screamed and wept tears of joy!!

But I started feeling a little sorry for hubs and his lack of seafood intake so while at the grocery store this weekend I did the unthinkable.

I bought crab.

And cooked it.

I was super proud.

Pug looked on super excited...while I ran around with a bottle of Febreeze and opened every single window in the house and lit every single candle I could find.

Oh the smell.

Boy will now be seen at Red Lobster for his seafood cravings.

  1. Impressive!! I don't think I would ever attempt to cook a crab at home. Even though I love to eat it, I can't even imagine the smell in my home :)

  4. Next time, go for the cheapo fish sticks that you stick in the microwave. He'll never want seafood again . . .

  5. Oh, that is so funny. The closest my family ever came to seafood were the frozen fish sticks. And we live on the coast. When I married Rob I had to really adjust to the whole seafood lifestyle, since his family LOVES it. I will eat it rarely, but will NEVER cook it. If Rob says he wants seafood, I direct him to the Lean Cuisine's in the freezer.

I have a friend who can't even go into Red Lobster with her husband so you are doing good to have even attempted the crab!!!

  9. I love seafood but I would never cook it at home. The smell is more than I can handle.
The look of you pug is priceless. My pugs whimper when they see or smell food.

  12. i PUFFY HEART crab legs. it's the only seafood i'll eat.

Next time, squeeze a lemon in the water - makes it not so harsh. & will be easier to pull the meat away.

Wait. Maybe you did use lemon in the water.
If so, kick me off your blog. ;)

  14. To me the smell isn't that bad but the lack of enthusiasm for all things that swim must be genetic because I'm not a fan either.

I can do fish if it isn't too "fishy" and generally comes with a good rub or sauce or something but I'd choose steak any day. In terms of seafood (lobster, crab, etc.) I can't stand it. I think it is the taste. Much too rich for me. I also don't do sushi at all which basically makes me a leper here because people love it.

  15. Love love love any seafood. The way we like to cook it in LA-you smell the spices & not the seafood. Cook it at home-on stove, in stove, & on grill-LOVE IT ALL! Hate you don't get to enjoy that love!
