the paci

Oh the things motherhood teaches you.  I was thinking earlier if only I could go back and have a chat with my former pregnant self I'd have a few words of wisdom to bestow upon her.

1. I'd smack her for belly aching some much about having to get up in the middle of the night to pee.  Poor you having to get up for a minute then curl back in bed and go right back to sleep.  Must be so rough.

2. Enjoy those elastic maternity pants because before you know it you'll be having to return to the inconvenience of buttoning up your own pants like the rest of society.

3. Get off your delusional high horse about pacifiers and how you "don't think they're necessary".  Because that day is coming soon where you'll have mastered the fine art of being able to roll over and pop a pacifier into your screaming babies mouth at 2 am all in the dark.  And those fears you once had of the day when you'll have to wean him off the pacis will long be gone because really if your kid wants to walk across his high school graduation with a paci in his mouth...then more power to him.  You'll come to peace with it.

So, never say never.  This kid loves him some pacis!

one month

dear declan,

you're one month old...how is that even possible?  i have moments were i can't even remember what our lives used to look like before you showed up.  i do remember a lot of sleep being involved.  sweet boy you have completed us and we are so blessed to call you ours.

thanks for your patience this past month as we get the hang of the parenting thing down.  i know you're appreciative that the whole diaper changing business is going faster as we've learned to work fast to not get soaked.  you're a cuddler.  i'm trying to savour the days as i know this stage will pass us so quickly.  i love our moments in the glider where you curl up into a little ball on my chest and we rock.  please don't grow out of that too fast.  you're still our little peanut.  you're 7.5 lbs and 20 inches long.  you're wearing newborn sized diapers and are still in newborn clothes.  everyone told me not to get too many newborn outfits because babies grow out of them so fast.  it was the opposite with you.  i had to run out and buy you more.  your feet are huge so your newborn footie pj's aren't working out so well.  you're eating every 3-4 hours and waking up twice in the night.  you are a strong one...lifting up that cute head and rolling over at 2 weeks.  you love that paci of yours and riding in the car.  we are just loving watching you explore your new surroundings each day.  you're a happy baby most of the day, but you do have your moments.  case in point this outtake.

 we are smitten with you!

all my love,
mommy

he's a genius i tell you

So, at 2 weeks and 3 days my kid rolled over for the first time.  I tell you this not to brag, but for your prayers for my sanity because I'm picturing my future involving a whole lot of climbing and chasing. And because it's been a month since I've slept those thoughts exhaust me to tears at this moment.  Boy on the other hand is elated and convinced this sign of strength and agility means great things for his future football career in the Big 12.

Here's a video of our little man rolling over.

Also, my kid loves to be held.  My mom says this is payback because I was the same way.  I love holding him, but laundry needs to get to done so I'm thinking of getting a baby wrap and need y'all's recommendation.  I'm looking at the Moby wrap and the Baby K'Tan.  Does anyone have a preference on which one to go with?  I've got one for when he is older, but need one more for a newborn right now.

the bodyguards

Well the pug's have accepted a new position around here.

The unofficial baby bodyguards.

They take this very seriously too.

I was really worried how they would handle this whole transition once Declan came.  And honestly, the first few days were rough (no pun intended).  Boy had taken them a hat from the hospital that Declan had worn to get them familiar with his smell.  Pug was the only one really interested.  Then when we came home from the hospital Landry wanted absolutely nothing to do with me.  He was ticked I left him for 3 days to be spoiled by the grandparents.  And the midnight feedings and crying was all new for them, but after a few days they warmed up and realized this kid wasn't going anywhere.

It's super sweet and I'm thankful they adjusted so well and quickly.  Rarely, will you find this baby without his entourage.  Even when he's snoozing in his rock n' play a pug is snoozing right by.

I wonder what they'll think
we they learn this new thing will eventually become mobile and pull on curly tails?

And speaking of pugs.  Y'all know we love the DFW pug rescue, that's how Landry came to us. Macy's is doing a Shop for a Cause and by donating $5 to the DFW pug rescue here you'll receive a 25% off coupon to use at any Macy's on the 24th of this month.  So shop away for these sweet pugs!!
